Work & Lifesharing

In Camphill Village, work is an opportunity to hone our skills under the guidance of experienced crafters, farmers, and gardeners. We witness and participate in all stages of creation, from seed to harvest, and from wood milled to cutting board created. We engage with our land, artisan crafts, and culinary arts.

When we perform work for those with whom we are connected, work becomes a social activity. We are moved by the sense of responsibility and accomplishment we have when we know our efforts are required, and when we can see how those efforts support the community in which we live.

And each person in Camphill Village benefits from the meaningful work of our peers. At mealtimes, we gather around a table created by the dedicated crafters in our Woodshop. We use napkins made in our Weavery and light a candle made in our Candleshop before enjoying a wholesome meal prepared in our kitchens using fresh ingredients grown by our gardeners and farmers.

We use the term lifesharing to describe the way our lives are intertwined through mutual support and shared experience. We do live together, but we also work together and grow together. Our lifesharing households provide a stable and comforting home experience that can prepare us to greet the day ahead when our social circle is expanded.

The diligent coworkers in our community—houseleaders, employees, volunteers and students of the Camphill Academy—provide guidance and support in our households and workspaces throughout the day. Through lifesharing, we all garner a deep understanding of the specific needs of our fellow housemates and workmates.
